Secular vs. Spirutal πŸ“š

An Intro to Blog Book Studies πŸ“š

Lately I’ve been battling between Christian and secular entertainment.

Binge-watching ‘Friends’ (which I had never actually seen before last week!) and reading romance novels seem great at the time. But I can never seem to get enough. I can’t put them down – and when I do they leave me hanging at the end, and longing for more. It's almost like I'm addicted. And I guess, like Ignatius, I’m finding that these things, while great at the time, just don’t satisfy!

What does satisfy are healthy + inspirational movies, thought-provoking spiritual books, Radio Rhema and it’s music and messages, and of course scripture!

But I’m human…and I mean who hasn’t watched ‘Friends?’ There’s so much pressure to fit into societal norms. What kind of sane person reads only books by Saints, watches only Christian videos and movies, or avoids secular music??

Ok I’m being a little over-dramatic. I do think it’s possible to have a good balance of secular and spiritual. It’s not like we have to swear off secular stuff altogether, because like I said, we’re only human!

But if spiritual media/entertainment is so lifegiving, than why is it sooooo hard to want to make use of it?

This past week has been a spiral of negative stuff. Physical, mental, social, emotional, spiritual….Blah. I am super stressed out and turning to sweet foods, romance novels, ‘Friends’ and solitude to try and cope, and forget about all my struggles (Yes I know, Jesus was not mentioned πŸ˜₯).

But the month before this was amazing! And I’ve recognized that one reason was because I had such a great prayer routine. But I also nourished myself spiritually through good books, music and entertainment – and as a result other aspects of my life were positively impacted too!

So, I’d like to introduce a new aspect my blog: Book Studies πŸ“š

One of my dreams is to be well-read – the kind of person who can quote straight from Pope’s and Saint’s writings and other spiritual books. And tbh I can’t really ever see that dream fulfilled if I don’t start reading! It’s that simple.

So I will be sharing (hopefully) weekly posts with summaries of whatever book I’ve been reading lately. This is to give me something to aim for, so I am actually reading a Spiritual book…and to help me process them cause I tend to read, highlight a few cool quotes, and move on but not take time to digest.

So here goes 😊 – starting this week, with ‘Interior Castle’ by St Teresa of Avila. First post coming very soon!
