Introducing 'Concerning Discerning!'

It's Easter Sunday 2020, I'm sitting in my room feeling pretty lonely.
This Easter is being spent in lockdown because of the Covid-19 virus, and while I definitely believe I made the right decision in staying at my flat 'Mary's Mantle,' rather than going home to Tawa to be stuck with my family for 4 weeks, it doesn't make this Easter any easier! (Don't get me wrong, I do love them, but I also love having my own space sometimes too...Try getting any work done while surrounded by 2 young boys pretending to do their schoolwork). 

I took a moment just now to sit in silence for 5 minutes - to stop worrying, and just be in God's presence for a bit. I definitely didn't get through 5 minutes 😅 but I was reminded again of how close the Lord is to me. And the idea of this blog came to mind again, as it has done many times over the last few days. So, since we're in lockdown and I have tonnes of free time...

...Intro 'Concerning Discerning!'

I don't mean to say that discerning is concerning, although it can be sometimes. But more like the title 'Concerning Hobbits' - I just mean that my vision for this blog is that it will be a place for me to share everything on the subject of discernment - particularly my own journey! 

Discernment - particularly of Religious Life - seems to be such a taboo subject. I love having conversations about if people are discerning, and what their journey has been like so far. But it's not something people just naturally bring up in conversation!

So in creating this blog, my hope is that it can be a source of hope and support for those also discerning Religious Life, an encouragement for them to start a discussion (with me, or with those around them), and just a sign that you are not alone!

(On that note, it is important not to go around blurting to everyone that you are discerning Religious Life - it's up to you who you tell, but there's no guarantee you will go through with it, so it's important to keep this time of discernment between you and God and a few trusted people, at least as you start off!).   

Here's hoping I keep this blog updated regularly...my other two have been sadly neglected...

The Thorn in My Flesh

 In a recent reading of the day, St Paul writes (2 Corinthians 12):   “…a thorn in the flesh was given to me, an angel of Satan, to beat me, to keep me from being too elated.”  I’ve been getting very caught up with a ‘thorn in my flesh’ lately. While the above image is a little uncomfortable, it illustrates this point well!  St Paul boasts of his weaknesses, so here’s one of mine:  I am a perfectionist. I like to have everything worked out well in advance, and achieved to the very best possible standard. I like knowing what’s coming up and how I can prepare for it so I can remain in control.   That’s a bit of an issue when you have a God who isn’t a fan of comfort zones and likes chucking us in the deep end! The Battle

Why is it that being on the brink of greatness is such an invitation for sudden darkness? Why is it that excitement for the future seems to steal the joy in the now? How is it that I am meant to stay grounded while dreams are set in motion? How do I make the most of now when it's so empty compared to what I know will be? When is it that I will step off this precipice and soar into new beginnings? When will the pinprick light win out against the shadows of doubt and fear?
